| News Title: | New teams and coaches in different postitions mark 2008 Deep South Classic |
Some local schools will be participating in the 2008 18th Annual Deep South Classic for the first time. South Cobb and South Forsyth boys teams and the Grayson boys and girls teams will be making their initial appearance in the long running holiday high school basketball tournament.
“Of the retuning schools and teams we have some unique situations,” stated tournament director Les Witmer. “Northwest Whitfield actually appeared in the very first Deep South Classic in 1991. They have now been a regular since 2005.”
According to the tournament director there will some familiar faces coaching this year but with different teams. Eddie Martin was the Brookwood coach when the tournament began in 1991 and coached Brookwood in the Deep South Classic through 2000 having won the tournament three times during that span. He returns as coach with Greater Atlanta Christian Boys. Gene Durden makes his first appearance back at the Deep South Classic since 1999 when he coached the Dade County Girls. He’s now the coach of the Buford Girls. Also, Keith Arrington returns as the new boys coach at Peachtree Ridge having coached previously in the 2001 Deep South Classic with the North Augusta Boys.
“And Craig Witmer, who has coached the Brookwood Boys since 2001, actually played in the very first Deep South Classic in 1991,” added Les Witmer
