News Title: Field Set for 2009 19th Annual Deep South Classic

The field for the 2009 19th Annual Deep South Classic was announced and again this year is comprised with all Georgia high school teams.

“With the state of the economy and same constraints we faced last year, we again this year will be a 16 team, 3-day, all Georgia team tournament, “stated Deep South Classic Tournament Director Les Witmer. “Last year’s format worked really well and although we didn’t have out-of-state teams participating for the first time in tournament history, we had a very competitive and entertaining tournament.”

The tournament will take place Monday –Wednesday, Dec 28-30, 2009, with all games again at Brookwood High School.

Host Brookwood, Grayson and Winder Barrow will have both boys and girls teams participating. Boys’ teams from Gainesville, Mill Creek, Osborne, South Cobb and Sprayberry will round out the boys’ bracket. On the girls side teams from Forest Park, Madison County, McEachern, Northwest Whitfield and Peachtree Ridge will also participate.

“We’re excited about the field of teams and look for another competitive tournament,” added Witmer. “This is the first year for Sprayberry, Gainesville, Forrest Park and Madison County to compete in our tournament.”

Brookwood boys will be defending their 2008 Deep South Classic Championship under new boys’ coach Daniel Bowles.

“This is the first time in our 19 years that the Brookwood boys will not have either Eddie Martin or Craig Witmer coaching (Craig Witmer stepped down after the 2008-009 season).” said Witmer. “But Daniel Bowles is well familiar with our tournament both as a player at Brookwood and having coached South Cobb as a participant last year.”

Also joining the ranks of those who have played in the tournament who are now coaches will be James Clanahan, the new girls’ coach at Peachtree Ridge.

“In talking to other tournament directors I think we’re all feeling the tight economy and are very much appreciative of those who are still sponsoring us and the many volunteers who enable us to put on a quality tournament,” stated Witmer. “Our goal has not changed since our first tournament back in 1991—that is to provide a quality tournament that is competitive, gives different size schools a chance to play different opponents in games that don’t count against their regional record and used to take place before they get into their regional play and still for many before they get into the heart of their regional schedule and provide a relaxed and enjoyable tournament atmosphere and experience during the holidays for all the players and fans alike.”
